Cheeky Evening Session

Level 9.93, Falling slightly

I started work early so was able to finish at 3pm. That meant I was fishing by 3:45 so should have about 2.5 hours. I fished peg 6 again. However the river was much lower and running much slower. In fact, the place where I sat 2 days earlier was now 3 to 4 feet above where I sat this evening. I had to spend 10 minutes digging in extra steps and clearing off a 1 to 2 inch layer of mud/sediment before I settled in.

Plan

I fished 2 rods, the stronger one was near the downstream bush but further out than I fished (and lost fish) on Sunday. The other rod was out in front of me, Sunday’s crease was not as evident today so I fished where I guessed it had been. My plan was to use small open ended feeders on both rods for the 1st hour with my usual mix of liquidised bread and hemp but this time I also added several small pieces of cheesepaste to provide a scent trail. I also intended to try luncheon meat at some point.

Quiet first hour

I had no indications until just before the first hour was up. I got a couple of light twitches on the rod that was out in the “crease”. However, a proper bite didn’t materialise. Having fed both lines, I switched to a small bomb on each rod. I also decided try try meat near the “crease” to see if that would spur on a proper take. Nothing after 15 minutes so I decided to alternate between meat and cheesepaste on each rod for 15 minutes at a time (one using meat the other cheesepaste).

First fish

About 5:15 I decided to try lobworm our from the bush. I would just leave it there and see if anything turned up. After about 20 minutes I got a bite and landed a Perch of about 1lb 8oz.

Time running out

Determined to catch a Chub, I went back onto cheesepaste on both rods. I also decided to go back on the feeder on the rod that was near the “crease”. Sure enough, around 6pm, I got a proper bite on the rod near the “crease” (the one with a feeder) and landed the following Chub of 4lb 3oz. Interestingly it had another hook in it’s mouth (which I removed); I wonder if this was one of the fish that eluded me on Sunday!

4lb 3oz Chub

So, it was a slow evening and was, yet again, saved by a late arriving Chub. Whilst I was at the river, the level fell a little more and started to expose the normal fishing area. Hopefully I will be able to fish that tomorrow evening. I have decided to risk it close into the bush. I have tightened up my drag and will try to hit and hold because I am sure there are good fish near that bush. Let’s see what tomorrow brings.
